On well-known Lawn Way, just steps from the beach in Capitola Village, the ‘Historic Lawn Way Cottage’ has been a cherished family retreat for generations. Owners Walt Wilson and Beth Wilson Bandy carry on the legacy of their grandparents, Vera and Jim DeMera, who discovered the magic of Capitola during their honeymoon in 1928. Nearly every year after, Vera and her sister, Jay Lumbrazo, would bring their families from Fresno to this charming coastal haven. Memories of beachside chats, fishing off the wharf, and evenings at the Capitola Ballroom to the tunes of jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington still echo through the generations.

By the 1950s, Vera and Jay decided it was time to put down roots in Capitola, purchasing a duplex in Capitola Village at 115-117 Lawn Way. For over seven decades, this cottage was a family-only getaway, holding countless treasured memories. In 2023, Walt and Beth made the decision to share their family’s beloved spot with guests, allowing them to experience the charm of the village and the comfort of their historic cottage.

Though their family always called the property “the cabin,” Walt and Beth decided to rename it the “Beach Cottage” when listing it as a short-term rental. With its historic charm and true “cottage feel,” the new name speaks to the character of the place and the kind of experience guests can expect—a cozy, inviting space that’s ideal for a beach getaway.

Capitola Magic

When asked about the best part of doing business in Capitola, Walt and Beth agree it’s the people. “Capitola is such a friendly community, where tourists and neighbors alike share the joy and magic of this village,” they say. With the cottage located just a few steps from the beach, local eateries, and unique shopping, guests can enjoy the community’s warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place where both locals and visitors feel at home, drawn together by the coastal charm of this small, quaint village.

For those who are new to Capitola, there’s a certain “magic” that captivates them, much like it did for Walt and Beth’s family so many years ago. Guests often express amazement at the beauty, the unique village shops, and the welcoming community that surrounds them.

Things To Do

Capitola is a lively beachside town with something for everyone. Walt and Beth find it difficult to choose just one favorite thing to do in Capitola, though sitting on the benches in front of the sea wall with a morning coffee is high on the list. “It’s very peaceful and serene,” they say, “and there’s just something about watching the waves roll in that puts everything in perspective.”

Families who come to stay at the Lawn Way Cottage find themselves immersed in many of the same activities that generations of Walt and Beth’s family enjoyed—whether it’s days on the beach, boating or fishing on the Wharf, or browsing longstanding local favorites like El Toro Bravo, the Craft Gallery, and Hot Feet–all add to the village’s nostalgic charm. Guests new to Capitola often discover a treasure trove of wonderful restaurants, specialty shops, and the allure of the beach and wharf, leading to rave reviews and plans for return visits.
