Devon’s journey in Capitola began 15 years ago when he and his wife, both experienced managers at Nordstrom, decided to make a life change. “We were walking through the village one day and saw a business for sale,” Devon recalls. Two years later, they took the leap and have now been running Capitola Reef for 13 years. It was a natural transition from a corporate setting to owning a small business in a close-knit community, and they’ve never looked back.
…But the Name Remains the Same
Interestingly, the name “Capitola Reef” was not something Devon and his wife came up with on their own. “We kept the name of the business when we bought it,” he shares. It was a name that already had local recognition, and they felt it was the perfect fit to continue building on the shop’s established presence.

Devon speaks passionately about what makes Capitola a unique destination. “Everything is merely just steps away,” he explains. “You can park your car on Friday and never have to get back in it until your visit is over.” The village’s walkability, combined with its stunning beach views and friendly atmosphere, creates a perfect backdrop for a memorable getaway.

Devon’s own morning ritual is a reflection of his gratitude for the town’s beauty. “Every morning before I open my store, I walk to the end of the wharf and look back at our beautiful village and say a prayer of gratefulness,” he shares. “His daily routine speaks to the deep connection he feels to Capitola and its scenic charm.
When asked about his favorite thing about doing business in Capitola, Devon’s enthusiasm is palpable: “I get to meet happy people every day who are on vacation at the beach!” It’s this love for connecting with people that drives Devon to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone who steps into his shop.
