Nestled just a block from the beach in the charming Capitola Village, Sweet Asylum is more than just a boutique; it’s a haven of comfort and style. We recently caught up with owner Stacie Basile to learn about her journey, her passion for the community, and what makes her shop a beloved destination.

A Coastal Gem

For Stacie, one of the greatest perks of running a business in Capitola is its stunning location. “Every time I walk down to the shop, I’m reminded of what a luxury and honor it is to live and run a business in such a charming little town,” she shares. With 17 years of experience, Stacie relocated her boutique from downtown Santa Cruz to Capitola in 2008, feeling it was a natural homecoming. “I grew up on Depot Hill and worked at Zeldas restaurant for many years,” she recalls. “It felt right to bring my business here.”

The Story Behind Sweet Asylum

The name “Sweet Asylum” carries a special meaning for Stacie. Often confused with the flower sweet alyssum—a nostalgic reminder of her late grandfather who planted them in his garden—the name reflects her vision of the boutique as a refuge. “I wanted my shop to be a sweet refuge to everyone who visits,” she explains. The concept of asylum as a place of solace resonates deeply, making Sweet Asylum a welcoming space for all.

Favorite Local Indulgence

Capitola isn’t just about the beach; it’s a vibrant community that offers something for everyone. Stacie notes, “You’re surrounded by diverse and unique small businesses bordering the Monterey Bay. It’s ocean therapy for everyone.” Whether you’re shopping, eating, playing, or staying, Capitola has an inviting atmosphere that draws people in.

When it comes to enjoying the local scene, Stacie has a go-to spot. “My current favorite thing to do in the Village is get a spicy chai latte from Mr. Toots, then enjoy the view from the deck while soaking in our last bits of summer sun.” It’s these simple pleasures that add to the charm of this coastal community.

What Keeps Customers Coming Back?

So, what do clients love most about Sweet Asylum? Stacie believes it’s the quality and timelessness of the fabrics. “We’re best known for the softness and quality of our clothing. It’s functional and feels as good as it looks,” she says. It’s this commitment to providing a special experience that keeps customers returning.

Sweet Asylum is not just a boutique; it’s a beloved part of the Capitola community—a place where visitors can find beautiful, functional clothing and a sense of refuge. With Stacie at the helm, this charming shop continues to thrive, embodying the warmth and spirit of its surroundings. If you haven’t visited yet, be sure to stop by and experience the magic of Sweet Asylum for yourself!
