The Capitola Begonia Festival was a summer festival in Capitola, California that ran for 65 years until 2017. The festival featured a nautical parade, sand sculpture contests, and other activities.
Origins
- The festival began in the early 1950s as the Capitola Water Fantasy Carnival
- The festival was inspired by the Capitola Water Fantasy, which was founded by Peggy Slatter Matthews, a professional swimmer and Capitola’s first female City Council member
- The festival’s signature event was the nautical parade
Activities
- The parade included floats decorated with begonias, Queen Jeanette Hayford, and her royal court
- Other activities included swim races, an around-the-pier contest, water ballet, and a “fire dive” stunt
- The festival also included sand sculpture contests, live music, and a fishing derby
End of the festival
- The festival’s final year was in 2017 because Golden State Bulb Growers, the last local source of begonia blossoms, stopped growing begonias
- In 2017, the Capitola City Council named the begonia as the city’s official flower
